Burlington Lifestyle Village

Essential water filtration and contaminant removal

Project Overview

We installed two floating treatment wetland islands in Burlington Lifestyle Village’s stormwater system, providing essential water filtration and improving the pond’s aesthetic appeal. These FTWs ensure clean water flow while enhancing the community’s central outdoor recreation space.

Burlington Lifestyle Village

Burlington Lifestyle Village is a $140 million retirement development located on a 14.9-hectare site in Redwood, Christchurch. The masterplan features a central axis focused on a stormwater and wetland system near its core. This system includes two wet ponds, a shallow terrestrial wetland, and a final settling pond, collectively covering 2.21 hectares (14.76% of the site).

The final pond, spanning approximately 5,500 square meters, is equipped with two floating treatment wetland (FTW) islands. Positioned at the influent and outflow points, these islands provide 800 square meters of coverage (15% of the pond’s surface). The pond serves as a final filtration stage, removing residual sediment and contaminants before discharge via the main access on Prestons Road.

This area functions as the primary open space and outdoor recreation zone within the development. The sloped banks, soft planted edges, and wetland species integrate seamlessly into the wider landscape, enhancing the site’s visual appeal. The FTW islands contribute to this aesthetic and have quickly become a popular feature among residents.

Benefits:

  • Rapid construction timeline

  • Full water polishing and filtering capacity achieved within a year

  • Low annual capital investment over 20 years with minimal operational costs

  • Strong stakeholder approval

  • Compliance with consent standards
